5 Minute Review: Axel and Pixel

March 3, 2010

This is a rather simple, sweet wee point-and-click game that I downloaded from Xbox Marketplace when I was looking for some time to kill.  You control the character of Axel, an artist trapped by an evil rat in a perilous Dream World of Axel’s own creation.  Your task – to find a way to beat the rat and escape from Axel’s crazy dream world.

As you move through the different chapters you need to find the usable items and solve various puzzles – some are logic problems, some are button games, and all of them will put a smile on your face – unless of course you have no soul and were never a child, in which case, you’ll probably hate it.  As well as solving the various problems in your path, there are tubes of paint to collect, sketches to complete, and of course bones to collect as treats for Pixel.

When you reach the end of the final chapter you have to face the tree troll, a button game that will ultimately lead you to a successful escape and return you to your normal life where you can complete the painting that all the sketches have contributed towards.

There are also 3 mini-games as you go through, and if I’m honest, I found them a little frustrating at times as I’m not a huge fan of mini-games, but they’re really very short, and not enough to detract from the sheer light hearted fun of the game.

This is never going to be one of the great games of all time, and if you’re looking for something with hours of entertainment, lots of bloodshed, tactically challenging battles or state of the art visual effects, then this is not the game for you.  On the other hand, if you’ve got a couple of hours to spare and you want a light hearted, easy going way to fill them, then this is a fun and innocent way to do it.

5 Minute Review: Bayonetta Demo

January 5, 2010

Sadly, being stuck over here in the old USofA, I have not yet had the chance to play the full version of Bayonetta as it only came out today, though I have heard from others that it will be well worth it when I finally get the chance.  I have however sampled the demo and felt suitably impressed to write about it.  Read on to see why, even if Bayonetta’s oh-so-wiggly strut and skin-tight clothing don’t float your boat, the game is still worth a look… Read the rest of this entry ?

5 Minute Review: Viva Piñata – I was late to the party

December 26, 2009

So, you know how back in 2006 everyone was playing Viva Piñata?  Well I wasn’t.  It just looked a little too much like a ‘kiddies game’ so I left it well alone.  As time went on more and more of my friends confessed to having played it, and one evening not so very long ago, when bored with my game collection, I decided to download it from XBL (after all, spending MSPs isn’t like spending real money…) and moments later I was kinda hooked…

Viva Piñata grabbed my attention and all I could think about was getting these piñatas to stay and make my garden all pretty…  If I’m honest, this captivation didn’t last as long as it perhaps could have, but for a few weeks at least my evenings were spent gardening and looking after my new found pets.  Read on to see why I would recommend this game to any of you who haven’t yet connected with your inner child and given it a go…

5 Minute Review: Tap Tap Revenge 3

November 11, 2009

tap-tap-revenge3I bought Tap Tap Revenge 3 yesterday for the bargain price of $0.99 – I hasten to add that I have since paid $2.99 for a bundle of sings, but that’s a whole different matter, and not really necessary unless you have a particularly strong desire to play along to some of your favourite songs rather than just the free tracks available.

Essentially the game is, quite clearly, an adaptation of Guitar Hero or Rock Band for the iPhone, and despite the intense pain that developed from hovering my hand over my phone, it really is damn good fun!  For those unfamiliar with the concept, you have to hit the coloured platforms at the end of the runway as the coloured balls land on them, and at times it’s not quite as easy as it may seem.  It had been a while since I’d played a rhythm game, so initially I was slightly foxed by the easy tracks, panicking when more than one ball rolled down at once and just frantically hitting everything in sight until the frenzy passed, however, once I regained my composure I realised that the easy ones are just that, a little easy and lacking in challenge and have since tried my hand at some of the medium and hard tracks available.  Despite having studied music to quite a high level, and having a pretty good sense of rhythm, there are still times when the hard tracks frustrate me and I can’t quite get the rhythm right – it’s the syncopated ones that get me, I always forget about the off-beat, and frankly if I’m not getting 100% hits I’m just not satisfied, but that’s a personal thing, and by no means essential for getting on with the game. 5 Minute Review: Brutal Legend Demo

October 18, 2009

Brutal LegendThis has been pushed really hard of late on tv over here, so I thought I’d download the demo of Brutal Legend and give it a go, see if it was worth all the hype.  I have to admit, I was quite looking forward to it.  I do like a lot of Jack Black’s stuff, and thought this looked quite funny and entertaining from the adverts, so I had pretty high hopes.  I now feel a bit like I do when I come out of an overhyped film – it just didn’t live up to its promise.  Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t all that.

Read on to find out why, this time around, Mr Black just didn’t scratch the itch… Read the rest of this entry ?
