Music Catch is yet another fun, short iPhone game that is a good way of passing the time if you have 5 minutes and a set of headphones if you’re out in public.
The basic idea is that you move the glowing circle around your screen, using the touch-screen ability, and have to catch the various music symbols of different colours. Yellow are good, purple are very good, and red are bad. You get points according to how many symbols you catch, how long a run you can manage without hitting a red, and how many of the symbols you manage to catch in total, as well as how many of the little standard light green and light blue symbols you can catch along the way. There are 4 relaxing musical themes to choose from, and as far as I can see it makes no difference which one you choose. The game was retailing at $0.99, but once again I managed to pick it up for free, and you can too if you’re quick! It’s good fun, and a good way to pass a little time, but I wouldn’t pay any more than the $0.99 – there’s very little variety and no real progression, so it’s lacking that element of challenge to hold your interest for more than a few minutes at a time, but at the bargain price of $0.00 it’s worth every penny…

This has been monopolising a lot of my time of late thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It’s a strategy game for the iPhone which has been, I believe, ported from the DS. I’ve not played the DS version, so won’t be drawing any comparisons, in fact I won’t be saying a great deal except that it’s a lot of fun and you will find yourself spending hours trying to conquer the known world. If you’re anything like me then you won’t be able to leave it alone until you’ve conquered the capital of whichever civilisation you’re attacking at that point. As far as iPhone apps go, strategy games have been somewhat lacking, but this one stands out from the few there are. You essentially have to build cities and armies and try to take over the world. You can play as any one of 16 famous world leaders from Catherine the Great to Abraham Lincoln to Gandhi to Montezuma and who you choose affects the abilities, or perhaps priorities would be a better word, of your civilisation. I say priorities rather than abilities as they effects are only very minor. There are about 5 levels from Chieftain up to Deity. I’ve only played on Chieftain and Warlord, and to be honest, Warlord is still proving ti be enough of a challenge. I’m hoping to make it right up to Deity at some point, but I need to work on my strategies first!
This is a fun, kinda quirky game, that should appeal to all those of you out there who like rhythm games. Admittedly, it’s not got the variety from a ‘visual’ point of view of Rhythm Paradise on the DS, but nonetheless, it’s a lot of fun. Once again I managed to get this when it was free for a day (at some point I will review the app that lets me in on all these bargains, which I found out about courtesy of one of the members over at
