5 Minute Review: Music Catch for iPhone

September 15, 2009

music_catch_iphone

Music Catch is yet another fun, short iPhone game that is a good way of passing the time if you have 5 minutes and a set of headphones if you’re out in public.

The basic idea is that you move the glowing circle around your screen, using the touch-screen ability, and have to catch the various music symbols of different colours.  Yellow are good, purple are very good, and red are bad.  You get points according to how many symbols you catch, how long a run you can manage without hitting a red, and how many of the symbols you manage to catch in total, as well as how many of the little standard light green and light blue symbols you can catch along the way.  There are 4 relaxing musical themes to choose from, and as far as I can see it makes no difference which one you choose.  The game was retailing at $0.99, but once again I managed to pick it up for free, and you can too if you’re quick!  It’s good fun, and a good way to pass a little time, but I wouldn’t pay any more than the $0.99 – there’s very little variety and no real progression, so it’s lacking that element of challenge to hold your interest for more than a few minutes at a time, but at the bargain price of $0.00 it’s worth every penny… ;)

5 Minute Review: Civ Rev for iPhone

August 20, 2009

civreviphone580This has been monopolising a lot of my time of late thanks to a recommendation from a friend.  It’s a strategy game for the iPhone which has been, I believe, ported from the DS.  I’ve not played the DS version, so won’t be drawing any comparisons, in fact I won’t be saying a great deal except that it’s a lot of fun and you will find yourself spending hours trying to conquer the known world.  If you’re anything like me then you won’t be able to leave it alone until you’ve conquered the capital of whichever civilisation you’re attacking at that point.  As far as iPhone apps go, strategy games have been somewhat lacking, but this one stands out from the few there are.    You essentially have to build cities and armies and try to take over the world.  You can play as any one of 16 famous world leaders from Catherine the Great to Abraham Lincoln to Gandhi to Montezuma and who you choose affects the abilities, or perhaps priorities would be a better word, of your civilisation.  I say priorities rather than abilities as they effects are only very minor.  There are about 5 levels from Chieftain up to Deity.  I’ve only played on Chieftain and Warlord, and to be honest, Warlord is still proving ti be enough of a challenge.  I’m hoping to make it right up to Deity at some point, but I need to work on my strategies first!

Although this was reduced for a day, I am ashamed to say I missed it and had to pay the full retail price of $4.99, however, it’s well worth the money, as Hooty McBoob has said “I personally think that at £2.99 Civilization Revolution for iPhone was an incredible bargain and at the higher price tag of £5.99 its still pure value for money.” (You’ll have to excuse the UK pricings ;) ) and I have to agree with him.  I’m not one for spending a lot on iPhone games to be honest, I prefer to snap them up at bargain prices, but in this case I have no regrets.  You can check out the rest of his article here, and unless you think we’re both talking bollocks, I’d suggest your next stop is the app store…

5 Minute Review: Mevo and the Grooveriders

August 18, 2009

mevoThis is a fun, kinda quirky game, that should appeal to all those of you out there who like rhythm games.  Admittedly, it’s not got the variety from a ‘visual’ point of view of Rhythm Paradise on the DS, but nonetheless, it’s a lot of fun.  Once again I managed to get this when it was free for a day (at some point I will review the app that lets me in on all these bargains, which I found out about courtesy of one of the members over at ufogamers…) and it has provided me with a lot of entertainment, and some frustration if I’m honest, but in a good way!

The idea is the same as all rhythm games – you tap at the right moment – the blue arrow in the bottom left corner when you go through a blue arrow on the screen, and the yellow arrow in the bottom right when you go through yellow.  It’s a simple enough concept yet curiously addictive.  There are 5 levels, each with 3 levels of difficulty – silver, gold and diamond.  If you complete the diamond level, you unlock an avatar (well, costume) for your Mevo.  There are power up options to increase your score, freestyle gates where you just let your thumbs go crazy, and groove chains where you need to hit every arrow along the way too, though I don’t know what fate befalls you if you miss an arrow in said groove chain…  And let’s not forget that you get to ride on the back of a turtle!

It’s currently retailing at $0.99 and to be honest, is worth every penny (or should that be cent…? :s ) just remember your earphones if you wanna play it on the train, because lets be honest, nobody wants to be that guy…

5 Minute Review: Crack The Code – Free version

August 16, 2009

mastermind board game

Did you ever play the game ‘Mastermind’ as a kid?  The board game?  Well, if you missed out on that little treat you can make up for it now and play the shiney electronic version on your iPhone.crack the code pic

The concept is simple enough, and it’s yet another way to kill time with the help of everyone’s favourite toy… You have to guess the correct order of coloured pegs and are given indicators of how well you’re doing along the way – a little white peg on the right means that you have a colour correct but in the wrong place, a little black peg means you have both colour and position correct, but you have to work out for yourself which peg it’s referring to.  You can play 3 different levels, on easy you have to match up 3 different coloured pegs, on medium, 4, and on hard, 5.

There is a ‘pro’ version which costs $0.99, and for that you also get the option to turn on blank spaces and repeated colours in the code for that added level of challenge, but to be honest, for a way to pass 15 minutes or so, a few rounds on ‘hard’ of the free version is good enough for me and saves my dollar for other things…

5 Minute Review: Tower Madness

August 16, 2009

TowerMadness

This is a fun and highly addictive game for the iPhone which I was lucky enough to discover while it was free for a day.  The idea is to protect your sheep from the hoards of invading aliens, hell bent on turning them into inter-galactic scarves.  You build different towers across your field to destroy said aliens before they reach your precious sheep at the other end of the field.  There is a handy little bar along the bottom which tells you how far through the attack you are (2 of 42 means the 2nd wave of 42) and also tells you which aliens to expect next – different ones are vulnerable to different weapons after all, so if you see a wave of flying aliens coming up and you only have ground attack towers in place, you know you need to build something to help with air defence.  For each alien you kill you not only get points, but a few more pennies in the coffer, and thus the ability to build or upgrade your defences.  I’ll be honest, it kills the iPhone battery (but then, doesn’t everything?) but is worth it for the entertainment value.

The first level is pretty easy, it breaks you in gently; the 2nd is a bit trickier, with aliens attacking on 2 fronts and seemingly less money to start off with, it took me several attempts to get through that one; the third is downright impossible, with aliens attacking on 3 fronts – I’ll be honest, I’ve been playing this for hours a day and still can’t get through it, so I dread to think what the 4th, and final, level is like.  With each level you complete you unlock new weapons, theoretically giving you more chance of beating the next level, tho I’m yet to reap the benefits for level 3, as I said.

As a free game it’s been a damn good download; it’s currently retailing at a mere $0.99 and is well worth the money.
